The New Face Of Christianity In The 21st Century

By Angela Lyons

It is no secret that churches across the United States and around the world are loosing members each day of worship. Some say that it is because of the sinful times that we are living in and other say that its because the pastors and reverends are not ministering to the needs of the people effectively. Is there any more hope for churches in America?

There seems to be a new face appearing in Christianity today. It is estimated that evangelical churches will become the new beginning for modern day Christians. Pastors like Joel Olsteen, T.D. Jakes and Joyce Meyer all have weekly viewers into the millions. They are what you would call a “mega pastor”. Many churches find that people want to hear what makes them feel better and not for what they ought to.

Evangelical churches are often famous for non traditional church service. They often hold their fellowships in stadiums, the internet and old sports gyms. The Church of Times Square in New York City has thousands of members. It is run out of an old theater building and reaches thousands of people every single week. The gospel is heard by its founder David Wilkerson and the members enjoy preaching and teaching about Jesus to new members as well.

Catholic and Episcopal churches are seeing a decline in weekly church service. Many youth today do not want to participate in mass because they are either playing video games at home or sleeping. There are thousands of reasons why someone would not want to go to church. It is clear that Christianity is not the same as it once was in the United States and many other countries around the world. If we were living in the year 1960, everyone had to go to church. Families actually looked forward to attending mass each week or some type of religious service. In today’s modern day world, its common for kids to go to school and not feel any guilt from not attending weekly service from the church.

It seems like people have easier access to information. People have access to videos on the internet where they can hear the preacher speak or books from the book store. People seem to get just as much out of that as they would a Sunday service. Is there any good reason why anyone should stop going to church? This question is best answered by yourself.

Many Christians find it hard to attend church because of judgmental faces that they see on a weekly basis. They simply don’t want to bump into anyone that may know to much about them. It makes them feel uncomfortable. Christians today seem to be more comfortable viewing the church from the comfort of their own home, instead of with other Christians on a Sunday or Saturday morning. As you can see here, the Christian church is changing as a whole. Time will only tell what this all means.
